Mission
Our mission is to develop and implement a balanced curriculum to meet the needs of all learners in order to increase student achievement.

Mt. Lebanon School District Curriculum: An Overview

Mt. Lebanon School District is considered a state and national leader in the field of education.  Each year, 93%  percent of our high school graduates continue their education by enrolling in post secondary programs.  This success is a product of a variety of factors including parent and community support, a motivated student body, a skilled teaching staff, solid classroom instructional practices, aligned assessments that measures growth and performance, and a well articulated curriculum.

We believe that our curriculum must be comprehensive and balanced in order to meet the needs of all students. Mt. Lebanon curriculum is research based, modeled from best practices, and aligned with state and national standards.    Within each program of study, students master essential knowledge, skills, and competencies.   This occurs by having students participate in a broad range of opportunities both within and outside of the classroom setting.  It is imperative that students apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies to real world issues.  In addition to mastering core knowledge, skills, and competencies, the District also believes it is vitally important for students to develop competencies in “21st century skills” such as those highlighted in our strategic plan.  These skills include:

• Communication
• Problem solving
• Critical thinking
• Working cooperatively with diverse groups
• Resolving conflicts
• Taking responsibility for one’s own learning
• Producing quality work

This website has been developed to highlight our content areas and the accompanying curriculum. You will notice that the District has chosen to be structured by department/content area rather than by grade level.  Each department/content area is led by a K-12 curriculum supervisor.  The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that the curriculum is clearly articulated for each grade level and course.  Additionally, the supervisor also makes certain there is a tight alignment from grade level to grade level.   Both principals and content level supervisors are responsible for guaranteeing that the written curriculum is taught in a consistent fashion across the District.

On this site, each of the 10 departments has a separate link.  These departments are listed on the left side of this page.   Each link begins with the department’s mission statement and a general program description.  The information is then further delineated by elementary, middle, and high school.  At the elementary level, Key Understandings are provided.   A Key Understanding is what we expect our children to know or be able to do at the end of the grade level.   At the secondary level, a brief course description is provided.

For ease of use, we have also provided a separate link for grades Kindergarten through 5.  This will allow you to easily review the Key Understandings for each of these grade levels without having to move through each of the content area web pages.

Please feel free to contact either the content level supervisor or me should you have any additional questions or comments.
