late breaking news!!! there's a new kid in town! we're very fortunate to have a student teacher in the art room for the first two months of school. Her name is eva barinas and she's from carlow university and is a mt. lebanon alumni. many of the kids already know her as the counselor from last summer's horse camp, but are now getting to know her as an awesome art teacher. so if your kids are talking about the new art teacher, that's probably what they're talking about!

the pta has generously donated money to have a visiting artist here at foster! we were fortunate enough to receive a matching grant from the pittsburgh center for the arts to help make this dream a reality.
the artist is stephanie flom, a ceramicist, who is working with the fourth and fifth graders. her specialty is garden art. she worked with the fifth graders on their legacy project for the butterfly garden. they made native american wish pots. they then made macrame plant hangars with mrs. specter to hang them in the garden.
the fourth graders MADE toad houses. both classes have learned native american folklore and stories through their work with stephanie, which ties in beautifully with our art show theme. she has also taught them
breathing and relaxation exercises to help them focus on their work. This has been an incredible opportunity for our students. we'd like to extend a huge thank you to the pta and the pittsburgh center for the arts for making this possible!!!
The pictures below were taken of stephanie working with some of the fourth graders.

The following are a few of the coil pots the fifth graders made while working with stephanie. They made holes in the bottom of their pots, so that although they'll be leaving something of themselves behind, their spirits will be free to move on to the middle school. We had a special ceremony where they were able to put wishes in to their pots.
