Career Exploration
It is never too early for middle school to students start thinking about life after high school. Each year, every student at Jefferson and Mellon Middle Schools participates in career development activities. A brief summary of each career activity is provided below.
Grade 6
The Career Game
This is a career exploration game in which students are asked to complete an interest inventory. Students tally their responses and see where their current interests align with one or more career clusters or occupations (working with people, problem solving, working outdoors, etc). The final stage of the assignment is to share the information from the activity with parents and return the booklet with a signature the following day.
The Occupational Interview
An addendum to the 6th grade career unit, students are asked to interview an adult about the experiences they have had in their respective professional fields.
Grade 7
Bridges Learning Style Inventory
As educators we know students learn in many distinctive ways. Understanding your learning style; the way your mind receives and interprets information, is empowering. This information helps you to make; better choices, learn more efficiently, target areas that need to be better developed, read and study more effectively, and boost your confidence regarding academic performance. At the middle school level, it is imperative for students to gain knowledge about their individual learning style(s) and learn strategies for test taking. The Bridges Learning Style Inventory is a 30 minute, online survey that provides student’s instantaneous results regarding their own learning preferences ~ an analysis of 22 different preferences. This information can assist students in their learning process with interpretation and utilization of material presented in their learning environment. Ultimately, with an increase in their confidence level and self awareness, students will be able to make better decisions regarding their future endeavors ~ high school, college and careers.
Grade 8
Career Futures
This career software program, which requires a username and password, is accessible in all writing labs at Jefferson MS and Mellon MS. During this two day tutorial, students have the opportunity to take interest and ability inventories and research three careers in relation to the results of their inventories.
Career Fair for 8th Graders
8th grade students have an opportunity to attend presentations by community members who volunteer to discuss their occupations, professional experiences and educations. Students are encouraged to ask questions in a small group environment. If you are interested in presenting please contact your child's middle school counseling office directly.
