New Mural Dedicated at Foster School February 1, 2013
Foster Principal Jason Ramsey and Foster students celebrate the dedication of the school's new mural.
The students and staff at Foster Elementary School celebrated the dedication of a new mural installation today that highlights the work of the school's namesake, American songwriter, musician and Pittsburgh native, Stephen Collins Foster. The artist Debra Kuhn painted the mural that depicts scenes evoked from Foster’s songs and sheet music. The mural spans a large wall in the lunch room. The two columns that anchor the room are painted with lines of Foster’s song, “Camptown Races.”
The PTA funded the mural and sponsored a contest to solicit ideas for the mural. Students Chloe and Natalie McGee’s submission entitled, “Stephen C. Foster: So Who is He Anyway?” was selected as the winning entry by Foster students. Former Foster principals Ms. Barbara Float and Dr. Karen Kanell joined the Foster community, along with many former Foster teachers and parents for the dedication.
