International Clarinetist Julian Bliss Conducts Clinic at High School February 20, 2014
Mt. Lebanon High School wind musicians were treated to a special clinic conducted by world-renowned clarinetist Julian Bliss. The English musician is well known in the international concert scene where he has appeared as soloist with a number of important orchestras including the London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, and Royal Philharmonic. His latest recording, “A Tribute to Benny Goodman,” recreates the sound of swing from the 30’s and 40’s with a modern feel.
Bliss told students his story of how he began playing his instrument when he was four years old, even entertaining the Queen of England at the age of five. He demonstrated his circular breathing method while playing the “Flight of the Bumble Bee" while playing his specially designed Leblanc Bliss Clarinet. Mr. Jason Cheskawich was able to bring the program to the high school with the help of sponsor Bob Johnstonbaugh from Johnstonbaugh's Music Centers.
