Lebo Chemistry Students Excel in American Chemical Society Competition
April 24, 2014
Pictured are Mr. Mark Kernion, Ian Harris, Nancy Lu, Zhen Ding, and Mrs. Susan Meer

Each year since 1945, the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society sponsors a contest for secondary schools in the tri-state area to recognize outstanding achievement by students and their teachers, as well as encourage interest in chemistry among school students.

The contest recognizes three categories: first-year students in large school, first-year students in small schools, and second-year students. Congratulations to Zhen Yu Ding for winning First Place for the first-year students in a large school. His teacher is Susan Meer, and he is in her 9th Grade Honors Chemistry Class. Congratulations to Nancy Lu for winning First Place and Ian Harris for winning Third Place for the second-year students in a large school. They are both sophomores, and their teacher is Mark Kernion. Both are in his A.P. Chemistry Class.

The contest is also used to qualify students interested in participating in the International Chemistry Olympics and to identify students for scholarships. This year 130 of the area’s top students from 20 schools competed for prizes and scholarships. First place in each category is awarded $250, second place $150, third place, $100.

All winning students, their parents, and their teachers are invited to attend an awards banquet in May to celebrate their noteworthy achievement with the American Chemical Society.
