Students Helping Students Prepare for the Start of School
August 4, 2014
Mt. Lebanon students held school supply collections last spring to help schools in the region prepare for the start of school.

The first day of school is just around the corner, but some of our students planned ahead and held school supply collections last spring to help provide students at schools in our region with needed pens, pencils, notebooks, and erasers to start the school year.  Markham and Jefferson elementary schools took part in Students2Students--an initiative of the Education Partnership. According to the Students2Students website, more than 30,000 students in Allegheny and the five surrounding counties in southwestern PA are in need of basic school supplies every day. Markham and Jefferson collected supplies and money to help the participating schools.

At the high school, students in Dr. Michael Gullo's class held a school supply drive last spring that  collected 135 lbs of three ring binders, 13 lbs of folders, 45 lbs of spiral notebooks, and 25 lbs of office supplies (pens, pencils, rulers, etc.) for a grand total of 218 lbs of school supplies. The supplies were delivered to Spring Hill Elementary School in Pittsburgh.  The principal plans to have the supplies available for students to select what they'll need to start school.
Students Kara Touscany and Hannah Linn spearheaded the project and organized the collection with many other student volunteers. This is the second year of the project.
