The Coach Schreiner Award


 


On Nov. 8th at the Girls Cross Country Recognition Awards Evening, Ms. Debbi Fitzgerald announced the 2008 recipient of the Coach Ron Schreiner Award- ABBY SHURE.  The award, established by Ms. Fitzgerald, honors the cross country team member who best exemplifies the qualities of: Hard Work, Team Commitment, and a Positive Attitude.

Senior team leader, Abby Shure, was selected from several candidates nominated by Coach Schreiner. Abby is involved in a variety of school clubs and activities, outstanding scholastic achievement, editor of the school newspaper, and has earned multiple letters in Cross Country and Track. Coach Schreiner says that, " Abby is one of the hardest working, dedicated and most caring athletes that it is my privilege to coach.  I could not be more proud of her and what she has given to out team!"
 
Abby will attend Northwestern University and will study Journalism.

THE WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Mt. Lebanon Varsity Girls Cross Country Team ran at Coopers Lake near Slippery Rock University and placed sixth as a team. The top four teams advanced to the PIAA State Meet in Hershey, Pa. The girls team totaled 260 points behind Seneca Valley, 249.. qualifying teams for the state meet were: WPIAL Champion Latrobe - 89, 2nd place Knoch - 145,  3rd place Norwin - 154,  4th place N. Allegheny - 204. Representing Mt. Lebanon were:  jr. Samantha Carl - 17th,  soph. Shannon Moorhead - 38th,  sr. Anne McGinty - 56th,  jr. Marie Barcic - 68th,  soph. Ellen Dietrick - 81st,  sr. Abby Shure - 107th,  jr. Jennifer Challburg  -148th.

SAMANTHA CARL - 17TH EARNED HER THIRD WPIAL MEDAL AND QUALIFIED FOR THE PIAA STATE MEET IN HERSHEY PARK WHERE SHE PLACED 96TH IN THE STATE.

THE WPIAL JV - OPEN RACE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Mt. Lebanon Girls JV - OPEN Championship was held in Schenley Park on the Central Catholic race course.  The Mt. Lebanon Girls placed 3rd as a team with 104 points. N. Allegheny won the meet with a perfect score of 15 points !!!  Latrobe placed second with a team score of 56. Leading LEBO were:  sr. Martae Giometti - 15th,  sr. Lutong Yang - 16th,  jr. Lucie Gordon - 22nd,  sr. Olivia Pitcairn - 23rd,  soph. Claire Lingley - 28th,  sr. Hannah Mantheiy - 29th,  sr. Cassie Buchta - 31st. fr. Corrine Mantheiy - 43rd. jr. Kayleigh Birks - 49th,  fr. Emily Wells - 50th. Over 150 girls participated in the race.

Lebo Girls Cross Country Varsity Team places 4th in TRI-STATE Coaches Association Champioship

The Mt. Lebanon VARSITY Girls Cross Country team participated in the TRI-STATE Coaches Association Champioship held at Coopers Lake XC Course. The Girls team placed fourth. Leading LEBO was Samanth Carl, jr. 14th,  Shannon Moorhead, soph. 35,  Anne McGinity, sr. 54,  Marie Barcic, jr. 68,  Ellen Dietrick, soph, 95,  Abby Shure, sr. 99,  Jennifer Challburg, jr. 105.

The Girls hope to place as a team in the top four, next Thursday, as they return to Coopers Lake and compete in the WPIAL District 7 Championship.  They would then advance to the PIAA State Meet held at the Hershey Park complex.

The Junior Varsity placed 3rd behind North All. and Latrobe. Scoring for LEBO were Hannah Mantheiy, sr. 11th,  Chelsea Dowling, jr, 13th,  Martae Giometti, sr. 15th,  Lucie Gordon, jr. 16th,

Ricki Kong, fresh. 17th,  Alana Powers, sr. 18th and Clair Lingley, soph. 19th.  The Junior Varsity will complete their season on Monday, Oct. 20th at the JV OPEN Championship held in Schenley Park.

MT. Lebanon's Girls Cross Country Varsity Team places 3rd in the MEET OF LEGENDS  

     

Sat. Oct. 4, 2008-- The Girls Varsity Team participated in the prestigious MEET OF LEGENDS, held at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds, outside of Warren OHIO. This was the first time LEBO has participated in this meet and their third place finish as a team was especially exciting. Running in the Div. 1 level, the most competetive race for the day, (grade, place and time ) were:  Samantha Carl, 11th, 3rd, 19:22, Shannon Moorhead, 10th, 13th, 19:57,   Anne McGinity, 12th, 18th, 20:03,   Ellen Dietrick, 10th, 41st.,   Marie Barcic, 11th, 42nd., 20:50,   Jennifer Challburg, 11th, 44th, 20:52,   Abby Shure, 12th, 62nd., 21:32.
 
The course was flat and fast. The girls got a great start and just stayed strong all the way. This will help as they prepare for the Tri-State and WPIAL Championship  meets held at Coopers Lake. They will take the next 10 days off and train hard for those end of season events.

     

The Junior Varsity placed 4th at the MEET OF LEGENDS.  
Scoring for LEBO (grade, place and time) were:  Hannah Mantheiy, 12th, 11th, 21:58,   Ricki Kong, 9th, 12th, 21:58,   Martae Giometti, 12th, 18th, 22:09,   Chelsea Dowling, 11th, 20th, 22:19,   Kayleigh Birks, 11th, 26th, 22:34,   Emily Wells, 9th, 30th, 22:42, Cassie Buchta, 12th, 36th, 22:52.

LEBO GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY  WINS SECTION 6 CHAMPIONSHIP
 
On Monday, Sept. 29th, 2008--  the Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team won the Section 6 Title by defeating  USC and CV.  The team scoring was:  Mt. L. 16 - USC 47,  Mt. L. 15 - CV 50. The top 10 runners for LEBO by place and grade were: Samantha Carl 11, Ellen Dietrick 10, Anne McGinty 12, Shannon Moorhead 10, Marie Barcic 11, Abby Shure 12, Jennifer Challburg 11, Ricki Kong 9, Alana Powers 12. The LEBO Girls dominated the races as they placed 35 girls ahead of USC's fifth runner and 26 ahead of CV's fifth runner. This is the fourth strait year for the girls team to win the section 6 title. Their four year record is 28 - 0.

The meet also was Senior Recognition and the following seniors were honored for their leadership and dedication to this year's team.  Recieving their team blankets were: CASSIE BUCHTA, LISA BUONO, MARTAE GIOMETTI, HANNAH MANTHEIY, ANNE MCGINITY, KAYLA NEELY, TORY PAPPAS, OLIVIA PITCAIRN, ALANA POWERS, MEGAN REITH, JULIE RILEY, ABBY SHURE, STEPHANIE SMIGIEL, LUTONG YANG.

The duel meet season is now over and the team will focus on more speed training and preparation for the WPIAL Championship and qualifying for the PIAA State Championship on Nov 1st.

On Sept. 23, 2008, the Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team notched two more wins as they defeated Can-Mac and Trinity at Can-Mac.  Team scores were:  Mt.L. 18 - Trinity 44,  and Mt. L. 21 - Can-Mac 34.  The top ten runners and race place for Mt. Lebanon were: Samantha Carl-1, Anne McGinty-2, Shannon Moorhead-5, Marie Barcic-6, Jennifer Challburg-10, Abby Shure-12, Hannah Mantheiy-14, Ricki Kong-15, Martae Giometti-16, Chelsea Dowling-18.
Duel Meet Record to date:  5 -  0.  
 
On Sat. Sept. 27th, 2008, the Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team competed at the prestigious CARLISLE INVITATIONAL. The Varsity ran in the elite Reebok Challenge Race (top 25 teams with 70 entered.) and placed 12th. There was representation from Virginia, Mass. and New York. Samantha Carl led LEBO and earned a medal with her 20th place finish in a time of 19:36. Also running on the varsity team, their grade, place and time, were: Shannon Moorhead,10th, 49th, 20:18,  Anne McGinity, 12th, 50th, 20:19,  Ellen Dietrick, 10th, 121st, 21:25,  Marie Barcic, 11th, 122nd, 21:26,  Jennifer Challburg, 11th, 131st, 21:42,  Abby Shure, 12th, 158th, 22:13.

The Junior Varsity runners placed 9th as a team and were led by the following runners, grade, place, and time: Corrine Mantheiy, 9th, 49, 22:38,  Ricki Kong, 9th, 54, 22:47,  Chelsea Dowling, 11th, 61, 22:57,  Emily Wells, 9th, 65, 23:05,  Kelsey Walsh, 11th, 77, 23:18,  Kayleigh Birks, 11th, 23:33,  Colleen Benish, 9th, 95, 23:43,  Lucie Gordon, 11th, 99, 23:49,  Alex Linn, 9th, 108, 23:58.

The weather conditions made the course very muddy and slippery as some of the girls experienced falls and slipping on turns and such. They will next compete in Cortland, OHIO, in the Meet of Legends. This is a very fast and flat course and should provide a good set up meet for the WPIAL and PIAA meets at the end of Oct.


September  18, 2008

On Tuesday, Sept. 16,2008, the Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team won two section six duel meets, as they defeated both Peters Twp. and Bethel Park. The meet was held at Bethel Park and was a very close match-up for the Lebo Girls.  Team scores were: 
Mt. L. - 23, vs Bethel Park - 36,   and  Mt. L. - 24  vs Peters Twp. -31. (low score wins)
Scoring for Mt. Lebanon were:  Samantha Carl, Anne McGinty, Shannon Moorhead, Marie Barcic, Ellen Dietrick, Jennifer Challburg, and Abby Shure.

 

 

On Saturday, 9/13/08, the Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team competed at the Slippery Rock Un. Invitational. With representation in the VARSITY RACE from 26 teams and over 180 runners on the starting line, the girls from Mt. Lebanon placed second as a team with a total of 133 points. North Allegheny again out distanced the field as they won the team title with a low score of 88. Running on the varsity team and their places were: Samantha Carl-7, Anne McGinty-11, Shannon Moorhead-23, Marie Barcic-38, Jennifer Challburg-54, Abby Shure-88, Chelsea Dowling-122.
 
The J.V. OPEN RACERS also placed second ,behind North Allegheny, with a team score of 62 points. They were led by the return of Soph. Ellen Dietrick, who won the race, with an outstanding performance and time of 21:35. rounding out the scoring for Mt. Lebanon were: Ricki Kong-13Hannah Mantheiy-15Lutong Yang-16, Emily Wells-17, Alana Powers-19, Julie Riley-29.
 
The Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team will defend their section six title as they travel to Bethel Park and Cannon Mac. in the next two weeks.

     

 


September 10, 2008

The Mt. Lebanon Girls Cross Country Team opened their Section-6 Duel Meet Season,with an outstanding victory at home over a strong Baldwin team. The team scoring was:

 MT. LEBANON 20 - BALDWIN 50.  (low score wins).

Leading Mt. Lebanon and 1st. in the race was Samantha Carl - with a time of 18:49,  30 seconds off the school record for the Mt. Lebanon Park Course. The following Mt. Lebanon Team Members scored against the Baldwin Team.  In order of their finish was: Anne McGinty, Shannon Moorhead, Marie Barcic, Jennifer Challburg, Abby Shure, Chelsea Dowling, Ricki Kong, Lutong Yang, Alana Powers, Emily Wells, Olivia Pitcairn, Hannah Mantheiy, Lisa Buono, Tory Pappas, Lucie Gordon, Julie Riley. The girls have won the Section-6 Title... 6 out of the past 7 years. Their 7 year duel meet record is 48 - 1. Good Luck the rest of the season !!!!

The Mt. Lebanon VARSITY Girls Cross Country Team opened it's season with a third place finish at the Red White and Blue Invitational, Sat. Sept. 6th at the Schenely Park Course. There were AA and AAA girls on the starting line with over 350 runners competing together in the same race. Results were then separated into AA and AAA team place standings. AAA-Team results were: 1. North Allegheny - 111,   2nd. Norwin - 153,  3rd.  Mt. Lebanon - 157.  4th North Hills - 178. 

Running for the Mt. Lebanon Girls Team were;
Samantha Carl-10th, Anne McGinty-26th,  Marie Barcic-36,  Jennifer Challburg-42,  Shannon Moorhead-43,  Abby Shure-77,  Hannah Mantheiy-105,  Lutong Yang-137,  Martae Giometti-140.
 
The JV Open Race also was exciting as over 250 runners went to the line. Team scoring was:
1st. North Allegheny-37,  2nd. Oakland Catholic-84,  3rd. Norwin-93,  4th. Mt. Lebanon-100.

Mt. Lebanon ruuners were led by Alana Powers-17th,  Chelsea Dowling-19,  Emily Wells-20,  Ricki Kong-21,  Julie Riley-23,  Olivia Pitcairn-24,  Lucie Gordon-29,  Lisa Buono-35,  Kayliegh Birks-47,  Tory Pappas-51.


September 2, 2008

The Girls' Cross Country Team opened their fall, 2008 season with an outstanding turnout of 48 athletes. The girls' team practiced twice a day at 8 am and 3pm until August 22, 2008. These practices include running on the roads, cross country course, and track, weight training and core cross training. The girls have high expectations and hope to contend for a top four spot at the WPIAL Championship Meet October 23 at Coopers Lake. They also hope to make their eighth consecutive trip to the State Championship Meet held at Hershey, PA on November 1.

Returning top runners from last year's PIAA State Meet Team are: Seniors Anne McGinty and Megan Reith and Juniors Samantha Carl, Marie Barcic and Jennifer Challburg.
