Speed Limit Issue on Washington Road

The following information is from PTA President, Dave Cochran.  If you have any questions about this, please email Dave at dcochran2@comcast.net.  Thank you!

Following is a recommended draft of a letter that Washington Elementary School PTA has drafted
to send to Senator Pippy and Representative Smith regarding the speed limit issue on Washington Road.  Please read the WES Newsletter for more information as to why this topic affects all families.  Please feel free to cut and paste the following text into an email to both public officials.  Their emails are:

Dear Senator Pippy and Representative Smith,

We are writing in reference to the letter you received on November 19, 2007 from Stephen Feller of the Municipality of Mt. Lebanon regarding the speed limit decrease from the intersection of Castle Shannon Blvd and Washington Road to the intersection of Mt. Lebanon Blvd and Washington Road. The Municipality requested that the speed limit be decreased, on a permanent basis, from 35MPH to 25MPH due to the high concentration of student pedestrians.

PennDOT performed an analysis on this corridor and concluded that a decrease was not necessary. We respectfully disagree with PennDOT's conclusion. Their analysis did not consider the high volume of students and pedestrians in this area. There are over 500 students that walk that corridor on a daily basis to and from Washington School, Mellon Middle School and Mt. Lebanon High School. When school is dismissed, all three schools have students walking this area (at the same time of day) to their homes, to the library and to Uptown Mt. Lebanon. As PennDOT states, the average speed limit is higher than 35MPH and this makes it extremely dangerous for all children to be walking on this road.

As you review the letter from PennDOT (which Mr. Feller attached to his letter), it is clear that they did not consider the number of students at the three schools, the Library and Southminster Church Pre-School in their analysis. We request that you intercede on our behalf and direct PennDOT to lower the speed limit to 25MPH from the intersection of Castle Shannon Blvd and Washington Road to the intersection of Mt. Lebanon Blvd and Washington Road on a permanent basis.

Sincerely,
