SCHOOL MEALS ARE CHANGING***

WE WON THE AWARD!

All 7 of our elementary schools received one of the nation’s highest school nutrition awards, putting it in the same company as just two percent of the 101,000 schools in the United States.

We received The bronze medal from the USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge.

Mt. Lebanon is now part of elite company to be recognized by the HUSSC, as one of 2,800 schools nationally and just the tenth honoree in Pennsylvania.

The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

In February 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Let’s Move!, incorporating the HealthierUS School Challenge into her campaign to raise a healthier generation of kids. The goal of the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is to improve the health of the Nation’s children by promoting healthier school environments. To help meet the goal, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) identifies schools that have made changes:

  1. to improve the quality of the foods served
  2. provide students with nutrition education
  3. and provide students with physical education and opportunities for physical activity.

About the Program

The Mt. Lebanon School District’s Food Service Department is committed to providing healthy and well-balanced meals to your children.  Our cafeteria is focused on health, wellness and good nutrition.  We continuously strive to offer a large variety of quality food choices in the cafeteria.

Freshly prepared, nutritious lunches will be provided by our food service department.  Our program follows the nutritional requirements of the National School Lunch Program, Mt. Lebanon School District Wellness Policy and meets the nutritional standards set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

This bulletin includes information regarding the lunch programs that are offered to your student at their school.  Please make sure you read all the information that pertains to your student.

Families that have children attending a public school district can apply for free or reduced price school meals through the National School Lunch Program online using COMPASS.  COMPASS allows Pennsylvanian’s to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), etc., online.  Families can use COMPASS to apply for free or reduced price school meals only, or they can apply for other services at the same time (FS, TANF, etc.).  The website is www.compass.state.pa.us or you can continue to use the Free or Reduced Price School Meal application.  If you apply for free or reduced price school meals through COMPASS, you do not need to submit a paper application.

Good nutrition is essential to growing children. The food service staff is dedicated to helping develop healthy eating habits for everyone in the district.
