Foster Butterfly Garden

Come and wander our School's Butterfly Garden...the buzz of bees fast at work and the flutter of butterflies dancing on the breeze can often be heard.
The Foster Friendship Fence
By Rob Papke

For the past seven years, our fifth graders have worked with their Art Teacher, Lainee Specter, to create a Legacy Project for our school Butterfly Garden. Our students are introduced to the garden in the First grade when they grow seedlings in their classroom to plant in the garden. First grade family volunteers also care for the garden over the summer recess. During their years at Foster our students spend many memorable moments in the garden whether it is at recess looking for bugs and enjoying the shade or during one of their outdoor classroom lessons. The Legacy Project also hopes to instill a sense of ownership in their school and hence their community in our students.
The Legacy Project for the school year 2007-08 was a Friendship Fence. Working in teams of 2 and 3, the students designed and then hand painted Gothic styled fence pickets into “people” which were then assembled into a fence. The fence is a colorful addition to our garden and is emblematic of our society, rich in diversity and bright with optimism.
