PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY (1-5)
Physical Education should provide equal opportunity for students to create, learn, enjoy and participate in skill development through a wide variety of physical activities that have lifelong value. These activities should be designed to contribute to good physical, mental, social and emotional health.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Wear appropriate clothes for class. This would include shorts or sweatpants, t-shirt/sweatshirt and gym shoes. It is preferred that students do not wear jeans.
2. Follow rules and regulations governing activities, use of equipment and behavior.
3. Demonstrate an effort to perform required skills.
4. Demonstrate sportsmanship and respect for others through team and individual play.
5. Apply learned skills in related activities.
6. Be a good role model for others.
7. Develop a lifelong knowledge for use of activities.
8. Develop an appreciation for fitness and an understanding of the need to exercise at home.
9. Present proper written doctor or parental excuse to Mrs. Pattak if not able to participate in physical education class.
SKILL AND CONTENT OBJECTIVES
The student will be able to:
1. Correctly perform skills for lifetime and team sports and other games included in the curriculum.
2. Safely and correctly perform a variety of stunts and self- testing activities.
3. Develop and maintain a suitable level of physical fitness.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the rules, strategies and safety precautions for sports and
games included in the curriculum.
5. Correctly perform fitness evaluation tests and exercises.
6. Correctly execute skills needed to perform various rhythmic activities.
COURSE CONTENT (includes but is not limited to)
1. Low Organization Activities - ball activities, parachute, tag games, scooters, relays
2. Team Games - basketball, football, soccer, kickball, volleyball, softball, pillo polo
3. Rhythmic Activities - folk & square dancing, aerobics, marching, rhythmic gymnastics, singing games
4. Self Testing Activities - tumbling, obstacle course, stations, target games, yoga, track
5. Fitness - rope jumping, physical fitness, calisthenics
6. Lifetime Sports - badminton, bowling, shuffleboard, frisbee, tennis
The percentage of emphasis varies per grade level.
GRADING AND TESTING
Students are evaluated in relationship to the following areas:
--Displays Good Sportsmanship
--Participates Appropriately
--Demonstrates Consistent Effort
--Attends Class Prepared for Physical Activity (refers to proper attire)
--Sub items listed under Characteristics of a Successful Learner Students are evaluated to show whether their performance is acceptable or needs improvement.
HEALTH EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY (4-5)
In order to establish and develop a positive life style, young people should develop those concepts and skills that foster individual health and well-being. Personal health is multidimensional. The physical, intellectual, emotional and social dimensions of each person are interrelated and are influenced by such things as age, experience, environment, and other people, especially family members.
By emphasizing positive self-concept and high self-esteem, the student will recognize that the healthier a person becomes, the better the person will feel about himself or herself.
Skill development acquired through the use of group interaction, discussion and individual reflection prepares the student to bridge the gap between health knowledge and behavior.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Students will be expected to:
1. Bring required materials to class.
2. Observe classroom rules for behavior.
3. Participate in class discussions and activities.
4. Complete class/home assignments on time.
5. Check the assignment sheet or with Mrs. Pattak after an absence to determined what was missed.
COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The student will :
1. know that wellness involves the growth, development, and maintenance of a person's physical, intellectual, social, and emotional health.
2. understand that individuals can prevent many health problems and diseases by following positive health practices.
3. know that individuals need accurate information for attitudes and behaviors that lead to wellness.
4. acquire health information, decision-making skills, and coping strategies that are necessary for physical, intellectual, social, and emotional well-being.
5. appreciate that total health is a right and a responsibility of every individual, family and community.
HOMEWORK REQUIREMENT
Homework may be assigned one day a week. It should be taken home on the day assigned, completed as soon as possible and turned in no later than the next health class. Students should also review information presented in class and be able to participate the next week in class discussion.
GRADING AND TESTING:
Methods of evaluation will include observations of weekly work, health projects, chapter tests and quizzes, and class participation.
Letter grades to be applied are:
90% -100 A 60% - 69 D
80% - 89 B Below 60% E
70% - 79 C

Mental Health Body Systems -nervous, skeletal, muscular Teeth, Eyes, Ears Nutrition Alcohol and Tobacco Safety Exercise, Rest and Sleep Disease Medicines and Drug
GRADE 5
Body Systems -circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory Fire Safety Human Growth -endocrine system, menstruation (girls), maturity (boys) Nutrition Diseases and Disorders including HIV Drugs, Medicines, Alcohol and Tobacco Environmental Health
