The British in West Africa India was the primary colonial focus of the British in the early 19th century, but the British did occupy a few areas in West Africa. Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast, and Nigeria were controlled by the British, while most of West Africa was controlled by the French. The British first served as slave traders and later patrolled against slave ships. Risky African expeditions and explorations occurred among wealthy British investors looking for new trade opportunities. Makers of the Nineteenth Century: Cecil Rhodes The memory of Cecil Rhodes is preserved in Cape Town in South Africa. His influence still lingered years after this political and historical leader had taken his last breath. He grew up in a large and well-educated English family. He journeyed from a Natal farm to the South African diamond fields to make a fortune. He was well-know in business and politics. He used his resources to develop Rhodesia. However, there was a disagreement between the British government and the British South Africa Company on control of these colonies. |
The Age of Imperialism
