New Letters, Sounds and Words
Letters: Q, q, U, u
Words: one, little, are, here
Students have been recording information about all of the show and tell items they shared this year. These “Alphabet Books” will be coming home this month. I hope you enjoy reading this with your child.
Math
We have incorporated learning about coins, telling time and graphing information as daily activities during calendar time. Some focus points of the Math Workshop lessons this month are: finding the total after a small amount (1,2,3) is added to a set of up to 7; separating one amount from another; adding or subtracting one to/from up to 10; exploring combinations of a number (e.g., “6” is 3 and 3 and also 5 and 1).
Show and Tell
May 2 - Short U sound, as in “umbrella”, at the beginning or middle of the word.
May 9 - Something that is the student’s favorite color.
May 16 - Wrapper or picture of any dairy product. These will be kept at school to make a class collage.
May 23 - A favorite book.
May 30 - Item that shows about a favorite activity (jump rope, ball, dance outfit, photo of student playing an instrument or sport).
June 6 - Beach Day!!! Students may wear a bathing suit under their clothes, bring a beach towel and one or two beach related items.
Writing
We will be learning about the turtles living in the Hoover pond and writing reports about them. We will also be reading and writing about many books by the author Leo Lionni.
SCIENCE
We were fortunate to have Mr. Murray visit with the classes to help us learn about Wet Lands and their importance. We talked about the type of trees that grow in wet land areas. We are also finishing our year long study of trees. Your child will bring home their book of drawings of the tree outside of our room through the seasons.
