Julia Ward Howe Elementary School History

Our elementary school is one of seven located within the Mt. Lebanon School District. Mt. Lebanon is just to the south of Pittsburgh, PA. We educate students from kindergarten through fifth grade with an enrollment of approximately 330. Our main building was constructed in 1928, with additional wings being bulit in 1960 and 1967.

We are very proud to be one of the few schools named after a famous American woman. Julia Ward Howe is known for many contributions to our country with the most well known being her composition The Battle Hymn of the Republic. This work is now the national anthem for freedom. Born in 1819, she was a pioneer for women's rights and worked for world peace her entire life. We are very pleased to honor such a courageous woman.

Faculty, students, parents and community members work very hard to make our school the best it can be.  We look forward to making the 2007-2008 school year as memorable as ever as we celebrate our 80th year at Julia Ward Howe Elementary School!
