Jefferson Elementary School maintains its small school character even though it is part of a large complex in the Mount Lebanon School District. Housed on the same site as Jefferson Middle School, the elementary school's 240 students in grades K-5 live in the neighborhood and within walking distance to the school.
The elementary facility has 14 regular education classrooms, an art room, vocal music room, instrumental music room, a health office, library information center, auditorium, gym, and two large outdoor playgrounds. The school almost never closes. Students, parents and community groups use the building and grounds from 7a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and all day Saturday.
One of the strengths of Jefferson is an excellent teacher/student ratio. There is one teacher for approximately 20 students. The small class size and significant efforts on the part of the staff help to enrich and enhance the regular program.
Jefferson shares a strong educational partnership with the community. The talents of parents, people from the community and students from the high school are drawn upon to aid in remediation programs and provide a source for visiting scientists and guest readers. This commitment from the parents, staff and others provides the cooperation that is an essential part of making this school work so well throughout the year and is of immeasurable benefit to the students.
