In addition to the Instructional Support Program, Jefferson Elementary School has a Reading Support Program.  This program is designed to help students acquire strong reading skills.

To be eligible for the Reading Support Program, students must meet eligibility criteria.  Eligible students in grades kindergarten through Grade 3 will meet in small groups every day for 20 to 30 minutes.  Eligible students in grades 4 and 5 will meet in small groups every day for 15 minutes.

Scientifically based research is the foundation for the systematic interventions that will be used.  The National Reading Panel's Five Big Ideas (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary) are integrated throughout the Reading Support Program.

Student's progress will be monitored and charted on a 7 to 14 day basis.  This will provide essential data for the interventions used and ensure growth in reading.

One of the interventions used is from Harcourt.  They have an excellent website for parents and students.  I encourage everyone to visit their website: www.harcourtschool.com.  The first time you enter, you will need to type in the password, which is Beck.

I look forward to not only servicing those eligible for the Reading Support Program, but also serving as a resource to educators and parents.  If you have any questions regarding this program, please feel free to contact me at 412.344.2167 or abeker@mtlsd.net.
