Welcome to the Mellon Middle School Library

The History of the Mellon School Library

The Mellon Library has a rich and varied history. Many of our books are stamped differently which reflects changes in the district throughout the years. Our library was first established in 1939 as Mellon Jr. High. By 1983 we acquired all of the Jefferson Jr. High materials when that building closed. In 1986 Mellon Jr. High closed and we became part of the newly established Mount Lebanon Jr. High School housed on the sixth floor of the high school building. The district was reconfigured once again during the 1998-99 school year and the the two former Junior Highs were reopened as Jefferson and Mellon Middle Schools. This time the library collection was split between the two new schools and money was allocated to rebuild each collection. The Mellon Middle School library currently has over 12,000 materials that circulate to our students and teachers. The majority of our collection is less than five years old.

We also subscribe to many on-line services. The majority of our students' research is done through these databases designed especially for middle school students. We have a bank of twelve computers that are connected to the district's network and are Internet ready at all times. Because of our location on Castle Shannon Blvd., we are very fortunate to have a unique relationship with the Mount Lebanon Public Library. Students are able to receive a public library card here at Mellon so that they are able to utilize the public library's resources in addition to our own.

Library Donations

We are happy to accept donations with certain conditions. We ask that any donated materials be less than ten years old, in good condition, and "middle school appropriate." Because most of our current-events searching is done with on-line sources, we do not have a need for magazines or newspapers. A memorial donation is a great way to say "thank-you", recognize a birthday, special event or person. The gift book will be imprinted with a placard recognizing the donor or special event or person. If you have any questions about donations Mrs. Tomer, the librarian, will be happy to lend a hand.  She can be contacted at JTomer@mtlsd.net.

Frequently Asked Questions

For how long may I check out a book?

Fiction and nonfiction books may be checked out for three weeks.  Reference books may only be checked out overnight and returned in homeroom the next morning.  Books may be renewed; however, you must bring the book to the library for it to be scanned again.

Is there a fine if my books are late?

There is a fine of five cents per day for each school day that the book is overdue.  Weekends and holidays do not count towards the fine.  You will receive a notice in homeroom if you have an overdue book or unpaid fine.  If at the end of the school year you have a library debt, your final report card will be held until that debt is cleared.

Can I pay my fine from my lunch account?

Sorry, the library is a cash-only establishment. We are not connected to the lunch debit system.

What are the library hours?

The library is open from 7:50AM to 3:30PM Monday through Thursday.  Friday hours are 7:50AM to 3:00PM.  You may come to the library anytime during the school day as long as you have a pass written by a teacher.
