Four Mt. Lebanon High School students gave their school an early Valentine's Day gift last week by introducing an initiative called Start with Hello. RJ Giarrusso, Will Aracri, Jack Cameron, and Kyle Carskadden were inspired to introduce the program to the high school which focuses on activities to empower their peers to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness. The boys' plan was to start small by encouraging their classmates to talk with other students who might feel left out, alone or invisible. Along with their classmates, they chose activities that promoted kindness and inclusion over a three day period last week. On Day One of Start with Hello it was "Wear Green Day" where students and faculty wore green to kick off the program. On Day Two students played "Buddy Bingo" where students asked others for help to answer questions as part of the game, and on Day Three it was "No One Eats Alone Day" with the goal to have students talk to someone they did not know when walking in the hallways, before class, and during lunch. As RJ Giarrusso said, "If this made a difference in one kid's day it was worth it."
It was definitely worth it.
