Using their brains to capture bronze! MTLSD Captures 3rd at the Southwestern Regional Science Olympiad.

Congratulations to the Science Olympiad team for achieving third place overall at the Southwestern Regional Science Olympiad, held annually at Penn West University, California campus. The team secured medals in 17 out of the 23 events.

The following MTLSD students earned awards:  

  • Gus Kollar and Lucian Mikush - gold medal in “Detector Building.” 

  • Vivian Luo and Jerry Yu - gold medal in “Disease Detectives.”

  • Lucian Mikush, Katie, Ding, and Sam Maxim - bronze medal in “Experimental Design.”

  • Shanti Kochhar and Noah Seaman - Silver medal in “Dynamic Planet.”

  • Tessa Ternullo and Shanti Kochhar - Bronze medal in “Fossils.”

  • Owen Byrne and Sam Maxim - 4th place medal in “Fermi Questions.”

  • Henry Ellwein and Shanti Kochhar - Bronze medal in “Geologic Mapping.”

  • Henry Ellwein, Gus Kollar, and Ashley Wei - Silver medal in “Codebusters.”

  • Gus Kollar and Ashley Wei - 4th place medal in “Astronomy.”

  • Tessa Ternullo and Katie Ding - 5th place medal in “Forestry.”

  • Tessa Ternullo and Vivian Luo - 4th place medal in “Microbe Mission.”

  • Shanti Kochhar and Katie Ding - Silver medal in “Ecology.”

  • Lucian Mikush and Jerry Yu - Silver medal in “Optics.”

  • Owen Byrne and Sam Maxim - Gold medal in “Wind Power.”

  • Noah Seaman - 4th place medal in “Air Trajectory.”

  • Gus Kollar and Owen Byrne - 4th place medal in “Robot Tour.”

  • Noah Seaman and Lyra Stiglitz - Silver medal in “Scrambler.”

  • Ella Winters and Lyra Stiglitz - 1st place ribbon in trail event “Home Horticulture.”

The MTLSD Science Olympiad team qualified for the state finals, which will take place at Penn State Altoona from April 26th to April 27th.
