ESL

The Mt. Lebanon School District provides English Language Learner instructional support to all K-12 students who qualify for instruction. The services of English as a Second Language teachers are contracted through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. These teachers collaborate with classroom educators to design effective educational strategies and learning experiences to assist students with English and content mastery.

The goals of the program are to assist English Language Learners work at an optimal pace to gain proficiency in the English language, achieve academic success and acquire cultural familiarity. Students who meet the exit criteria as established by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are required to be monitored in the educational setting for two years. In any event, students may not exit the ESL program until the close of the academic year.

Mt. Lebanon School District’s ESL program is also pleased to offer after-school tutoring to English Language Learners. The tutoring program is flexible and often incorporates an “as needed” component. Please contact your son or daughter’s ESL teacher for details.

In addition, Mt. Lebanon School District offers limited full-participation scholarships for English Language Learners in grades 1-8 to attend the District’s five-week Summer Learning Center at Mellon Middle School. The Summer Learning Center helps students retain and refine knowledge and skills acquired over the course of the academic year and provides a firm basis for academic success in the succeeding school year. More information and applications are made available to parents of English Language Learners each spring.
