Congratulations to Mellon 8th grader Molly Bozick for having her play, IN PRINT, read this month at the Pittsburgh City Theatre! Molly spent a morning workshopping the play with the director and the actors prior to the 1 p.m. reading/performance.
Molly's play was only one of four to receive an honorable mention from over hundreds of student submissions to the theatre's Young Playwrights Contest!
Students from Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia are encouraged to make their voices heard by writing and submitting original, one-act plays. Molly's play was read in the theatre's Lillie Theatre, located in the main theatre.
Aspiring Lebo middle school playwrights have been participating in this contest over the past eight years and we are proud to add Molly to our list of winning plays. All plays submitted are read by professional playwrights and students are sent back a critiqued version of their play.
The contest is run under the guidance of Mrs. Duchin, enrichment/gifted coordinator for the middle schools.
Synopsis of IN PRINT:
Constrained by gender barriers of the London 1890s society, housewife Beatrice Watson campaigns to publish a novel she believes will be very successful. After being outright denied by the publishing company her husband uses, she realizes she must break some rules in order for her voice to be heard. Beatrice teams up with a promising young publisher who doesn't share many of the popular, misogynistic views. This play questions the outdated opinions that unfortunately some women still face today as Beatrice learns her worth, regardless of how much credit she is given.
