Cyberbullying for Parents

Understanding Addiction
Presented by:  Julia D’Alo, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer, Gateway Rehab

Session Description
Understanding addiction is a complex issue. Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted. They may mistakenly think that those who
drink in excess or use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could
stop their compulsive behavior by simply choosing to. In reality, addiction is a
disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will.
Fortunately, researchers know more than ever about how addiction affects the
brain and have found treatments that can help people recover from addiction and
lead productive lives.

Dr. Julie D’Alo, an Emergency Physician at St. Clair Hospital and the Chief Medical Officer at Gateway Rehabilitation will discuss how exposure to alcohol and drugs at
a young age can potentially lead to addiction. While the initial decision to
experiment with alcohol or drugs is voluntary for most people, repeated use can
lead to brain changes that challenge an addicted person’s self-control and interfere
with their ability to resist intense urges to continue use.
