English Language Development

At Mt. Lebanon School District, we are proud of the many languages, cultures, and experiences that make up our community. Our English as a Second Language Development (ELD) program supports students as they build the language skills needed to succeed in school and beyond.

Our Approach

Our ELD program is aligned with Pennsylvania standards and designed to help students develop confidence and proficiency in English while continuing to grow academically.

Students receive instruction in:

• Listening
• Speaking
• Reading
• Writing

Students receiving ELD services may also receive classroom accommodations to support their learning.

Examples include:

• Visual supports and guided notes
• Extended time on assignments and assessments
• Modified or scaffolded tasks
• Small group support

How Services Are Provided

Support is tailored to each student’s age, grade level, and English language proficiency.

Elementary (Grades K–5)

• Small group “pull-out” instruction.
• 45–90 minutes of daily support based on student needs.
• Focus on vocabulary, literacy, and communication skills.

Middle & High School (Grades 6–12)

• Scheduled ESL class periods during the school day.
• One or two class periods, depending on language proficiency.
• Focus on academic language, reading, writing, and communication.

As students grow in their skills, the level of support adjusts to meet their evolving needs.
