January | 2018 MTLSD NEWSLETTER Student Artwork Inspired by Ocean Activism Receives National Award Mt. Lebanon High School junior Hannah Jones won the Pearl Award for her art submission to the 2017 Ocean Awareness Student Contest, sponsored by Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs. Hannah was selected from more than 1,900 high school entries from 63 countries and 48 U.S. states and received a $300 cash award. The 2017 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest challenged students to create visual art, poetry, prose, or film around the theme of "Ocean Pollution: Challenges & Solutions" to reflect on the impact of ocean pollution, inspire viewers to consider possible solutions, and challenge them to take action. Hannah's submission, titled "Delicate Balance," addressed the specific issue of coral bleaching. This is an exquisite example of how Art can transform STEM into STEAM. Important Changes to March 2018 Calendar Please note two very important changes to the March 2018 school calendar: 1. March 1, 2018: classes are canceled ONLY for Mt. Lebanon High School students due to the high school hosting the Spring 2018 Pennsylvania Association of Student Council's State conference. The elementary and middle schools will be in session. High School staff will be involved in professional development activities during the day. 2. March 13, 2018: Due to the special election for the 18th Congressional District, classes are canceled ONLY for elementary and middle school students. The High School will be in session. K-8 staff will be involved in professional development activities during the day.
Mellon Students Are Stock Market Savvy Congratulations to Mellon Middle School students David Poole, Noah Bhuta, Tommy Hanson, Eli Heidenreich and Nico Vannarsdall on winning first and second place in the Fall 2017 Pittsburgh/Southwestern Pennsylvania Stock Market Games in the Middle School Division. Their success was based on their knowledge of business, the global economy, and investing by creating top performing portfolios. Read More
Upper Practice Field "Rock Pile" Update At the January 15 School Board meeting, the Board voted to award the design of the resurfacing of the upper practice field known as the "Rock Pile" to J. T. Sauer & Associates of Burgettstown, PA. The engineering work will include two concept plans for regulation size fields and the complete design of one selected option including site survey, soil testing, geotechnical report, field design, permitting, meetings, bidding and construction observation. The plans will be presented at a future School Board meeting.
School Board Approves 2018-2019 School Calendar The School Board approved the 2018-2019 School District Calendar at the January 15 School Board meeting. The first day of school is set for August 27. The District will have a four day spring break from April 17-22, and the last day of school will be June 10. 2018-2019 District Calendar
School Board Selects New Board Member The Mt. Lebanon School Board selected Mr. Al Frioni for the open two-year seat on the Board. The Board interviewed Mr. Frioni at a public meeting on December 18 along with four other candidates. Mr. Frioni was sworn in at the meeting and took his seat with the Board.
Boys' Basketball Coach Notches 300th Win Mt. Lebanon Boys' Basketball Coach Joe David marked a major milestone when he won his 300th game as coach of the Blue Devils on January 13. Congratulations to Coach David on this outstanding accomplishment. Read more in The Almanac |
