February | 2019 MTLSD NEWSLETTER Social & Emotional Learning in Mt. Lebanon Schools The Mt. Lebanon School District has embarked on a Social and Emotional Learning initiative to advance CASEL's (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning) framework.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. School Calendar Changes Due to Special Election and Weather Cancellations Changes have been made to the 2018-2019 school calendar due to a special election in April and school closures as a result of extreme cold temperatures and snow. Read More
Everitt Meer Prudential Spirit of Community Award Recipient We are proud to announce that Everitt Meer, a Mt. Lebanon High School sophomore, has been selected as a Distinguished Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. This national program that honors middle level and high school students for outstanding volunteer service is sponsored by Prudential Financial, in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Odyssey of the Mind Teams: Spontaneous Problem Solvers Last month, twenty-one Odyssey of the Mind teams from across Mt. Lebanon came together in Center Court to practice their "Spontaneous" problem-solving skills. "Spontaneous Problems," require teams to tackle verbal, story-telling, building, logistics, and communication challenges quickly and collaboratively while being observed by judges.
Going the Extra Mile: Chrissa Sullivan and Mark Kernion Congratulations to Mrs. Chrissa Sullivan and Mr. Mark Kernion who were both honored with the Extra Mile Award at the School Board meeting on February 25, 2019.
Eva Dorr: KDKA Extra Effort Award Winner High School Junior Eva Dorr was selected as a KDKA Extra Effort Award Winner on February 26. Eva was selected for her great academic record, community service and her exceptional athletic talent in both field and ice hockey.
School Board Audit and Finance Committee Meeting Plan to attend a meeting of the School Board Audit and Finance Committee on March 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Room D205. District Business Director Rob Geletko will present "School Budgeting 101" — a primer on what goes into developing the District's budget.
HS Student Regional Brain Bee Winner Congratulations to Junior Danny Bui who won the 2019 Pittsburgh Regional Brain Bee on February 16 at the University of Pittsburgh Center for Neuroscience. Danny will represent our region at the USA Brain Bee Championship on April 12-14 at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA.

Superintendent and Police Chief Talk Safe2Say App on KDKA Superintendent Tim Steinhauer and MLPD Chief Aaron Lauth were recently interviewed by KDKA about the District's roll out of the state's Safe2Say app-the new school safety alert program.
Boys' Basketball Advances to WPIAL Championship Game Congratulations to our Blue Devils on advancing to the WPIAL Boys' Basketball Championship! The boys punched their ticket to the big game after last night's win against Canon-Mac. The championship game is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at the University of Pittsburgh Petersen Events Center. Tickets may be purchased in advance in the MTLSD Athletic Office: $10 adults and $5 students. All tickets will be $10 at the game. Pick up your tickets and support our Blue Devils!
