SUMMER TERM

No. 605 Summer Health Class For Students (A202)

Mondays through Thursday June 15th-July 9th

8:00 am-12:00 pm

INSTRUCTOR: Ms. Stilley/Ms. Billotte

R $300; NR $330 (Limit 20)

The high school Health course is a sixty (60) hour session yielding a semester of school work.  It includes 15 mandatory classroom sessions that are held 4 days a week beginning Monday, June 15th. Missing any class time is subject to not meeting the requirements for a passing grade. Please note that it is the responsibility of the student/parent and not the Mt. Lebanon Summer Program to verify with their home district whether the class they are taking will fulfill necessary requirements.

(Grades 10, 11, 12) (1-Credit) This course is a concentrated version of the regular health course taught during the school year.  It is designed for those students who wish to fulfill the health requirement outside of their regular school schedule. Health may also be taken for credit recovery for those who failed to complete the course during the regular school year.

The pace of the course is geared toward those who are willing and able to grasp the various concepts in a short period of time.  Health is a course in self-awareness and self-analysis that challenges the student to examine their lifetime choices and decisions.  There is a strong emphasis on holistic wellness including the physical, mental, emotional and social components. The units of study include emotional wellness, stress management, nutrition, exercise, disease prevention and immunity.  The unit in emergency aid includes instruction and certification in CPR. Social problems of alcohol and other drugs are presented, and human sexuality is explored in depth. Parents should note that a degree of social and emotional maturity is required to participate comfortably in the course; therefore the decision as to when the course is selected during the high school career should be made after careful consideration of the individual student’s level of maturity.

Students must complete a portfolio project for the Health course in order to fulfill graduation requirements.  Students should see the instructor for additional information on this project.

The full program consists of 3 in-person classes (an introductory class, a guest presentation, and the final exam); 7-online modules that can be done from any computer at any time before the final exam, 3-hours of individualized simulation; and individualized car instruction. This fee also includes the Pennsylvania state approved driver licensing test.

Students who successfully complete the Mt. Lebanon theory/simulation are eligible for road instruction and license testing with Mt. Lebanon program certified instructors. Students who have successfully completed other Pennsylvania Department of Education approved programs are eligible to take car instruction and license testing through the Mt. Lebanon program (as part of the Car Instruction Only Program). Students must show proof of successful completion of a PDE approved theory course from another institution for the car only portion. The charge for the six hours of road instruction which includes one half hour for license testing is listed above.
