Melissa R. Friez, ED.D.

Dr. Melissa Friez became Superintendent of the Mt. Lebanon School District in July 2023. Before her current role, she served as Superintendent of the North Allegheny School District starting in 2021, having initially joined the district in 2019 as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools.
Dr. Friez dedicated sixteen years to the Pittsburgh Public Schools, where she held various roles including Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Leadership, Principal of Allderdice and Peabody High Schools, and English teacher.
Dr. Friez holds a doctorate in Administrative and Policy Studies and a Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility from the University of Pittsburgh. She also earned a master’s degree in Secondary English Education from Duquesne University and K-12 Principal Certification from Carlow University. Her academic journey began at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Psychology.
A native of Pittsburgh, Melissa is married to her high school sweetheart, Brandon Friez. Together, they have two sons, Brandon and Alex, and a dog named Hamilton.
Superintendent Evaluation
According to Pennsylvania School Code, all school districts are required to develop objective performance standards and post them on the district’s website. The Superintendent must be evaluated annually, and the objective performance standards must be mutually agreed upon by both the Board and the Superintendent. To that end, the Mt. Lebanon School District Board of Directors and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Melissa Friez have mutually agreed upon five performance standards aligned to the 2019 - 2025 Strategic Plan.
The Mt. Lebanon School District Board of Directors rated Dr. Friez on these standards aligned to the 2018 - 2025 Strategic Plan and assessed her as not only meeting, but exceeding, the standards for the 2024-25 school year:
