Gifted Education
At Mt. Lebanon, we believe every student deserves to be met where they are and stretched toward what's next. Our gifted education program builds on more than a century of academic excellence, giving identified students the depth, challenge, and creativity they need to thrive. Grounded in a Universal Design for Learning approach, gifted support here is inclusive by design.
How Gifted Support Works
When a student is identified as gifted, our Gifted Multidisciplinary Team (GMDT) determines whether they need specially designed instruction. If so, the team develops a Gifted Individualized Education Plan (GIEP), a strengths-based plan that shapes how a student's content, learning process, and projects are tailored to their outstanding strengths.
How Services Are Provided
Elementary (Grades K–5)
Our elementary program meets learners through tiered enrichment woven right into the school day. Every student benefits from differentiated, engaging core instruction; some receive targeted, more complex challenges; and others dive into intensive enrichment like math acceleration, curriculum compacting, independent studies, and investigative projects. For students with a GIEP, specially designed instruction adds further challenge in their areas of strength.
Middle & High School (Grades 6–12)
As students move into middle and high school, gifted support grows with them. Through a GIEP, learners receive specially designed instruction tailored to their strengths, plus a wide range of enrichment beyond the classroom — workshops, lectures, academic competitions, and career exploration. High schoolers can also apply to Allegheny Intermediate Unit Apprenticeship Programs in 20+ fields, from engineering and architecture to musical theater and health careers, exploring a real-world interest across the school year. (Apprenticeships require a 3.0 non-weighted QPA; applications open in early April.)
