Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. In a school setting, Section 504 ensures that students with physical or mental impairments that substantially limit one or more major life activities have equal access to their education.
Unlike an IEP, a 504 Plan does not provide specially designed instruction. It provides accommodations and supports that give students access to the same educational opportunities as their peers.
Common accommodations may include:
- Extended time on tests and assignments
- Preferential seating
- Modified homework or testing conditions
- Access to assistive technology
- Rest breaks or health management accommodations

Who Qualifies for a 504 Plan?
A student may qualify for a 504 Plan if they have a diagnosed physical or mental impairment, including conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, diabetes, asthma, or physical disabilities, that substantially limits a major life activity. A student does not need to be receiving special education services to be eligible.
Requesting an Evaluation
How It Works
- Contact your student's school counselor or principal to begin the process.
- The District will review the request and, with parental consent, conduct an evaluation to determine eligibility.
If your child is found eligible for a 504 plan, an accommodation plan will be built.
