Winter Safety Tips

Winter is upon us and the MTLSD Health Services Department would like to share these cold weather tips from the Red Cross and Allegheny County Health Department:

  • Layer Up - Wear layers of lightweight clothing to stay warm. Gloves and hats will help prevent losing your body heat. As much as 50% of your body heat is lost through your head
  • Cover your mouth with a scarf to protect lungs from direct, extremely cold air
  • Wear waterproof boots/sturdy shoes/warm socks to keep your feet warm and dry - make sure they have good traction to prevent slips and falls
  • Check on the Elderly, very young and those that work or do sports outdoors for long periods
  • Don't forget your furry friends - Bring pets indoors. If they can't come in - make sure they have enough shelter to keep them warm and that they can get to unfrozen water. Check on them frequently
  • Remember the Three feet rule - If you are using a space heater - place it on a level- hard surface and keep anything flammable at least 3 feet away - things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains, rugs, etc.
  • Turn off space heaters and make sure fireplace embers are out before leaving the room or going to bed
  • Don't Catch Fire! If you are using a fireplace, use a glass or metal fire screen large enough to catch sparks and rolling logs
  • The kitchen is for Cooking....Never use a stove or oven to heat your home
  • Protect your Pipes....Run your water frequently - even a trickle to help prevent pipes from freezing
Snow Shoveling Tips
  • Pushing or sweeping the snow is better than lifting it
  • If you must lift, bend at the hips and knees - not at the waist - and lift less than a shovelful at a time
  • Keep the shovel close to your body; turn and step away and deposit the snow. Don't twist and throw
  • Pace yourself - stopping to rest and stretch at least every 15 minutes or so
  • Shut the engine off a snow blower and wait for all moving parts to stop before unclogging the discharge chute
  • Use a stick, NOT your hands or feet to remove obstructions.
  • Always clear the area first of objects under the snow that might be picked up or thrown
  • If you are not physically fit and those with a cardiac history or even family history of cardiovascular disease should not shovel snow

Winter Safe Driving Tips
  • Make sure your vehicle is ready for the winter
  • Check tire pressure, fluid levels and keep you gas tank fueled
  • Carry some emergency tools - flashlight - scraper - first aid supplies
  • Be careful and courteous
  • Allow ample space between vehicles
  • Remove all snow from the hood - roof and all windows - It is the law!
