Social & Emotional Learning in Mt. Lebanon Schools

The Mt. Lebanon School District has embarked on a Social and Emotional Learning initiative using CASEL's (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning) framework.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

The community also identified SEL as a critical competency in our strategic planning process and it is now reflected in the District's new strategic plan approved by the School Board in January 2019.

This initiative incorporates professional development where participants will learn the social and emotional competencies, how they impact student health, well-being, and learning. They will identify strategies that increase social and emotional well-being in learning environments.

The Collaborative for Academic, Social, & Emotional Learning (CASEL) is the world's leading organization advancing one of the most important fields in education in decades: the practice of promoting integrated academic, social, and emotional learning for all children in preschool through high school.

At the February 25, 2019 School Board meeting, Dr. Steinhauer gave a presentation outlining our SEL goals and activities to date.
