This year's calendar cover, taken by photographer John C. Schisler, features the Reading Buddy project with students from Jefferson Middle and Jefferson Elementary schools. Mrs. Chrissa Sullivan's Family Consumer Science Enrichment class partners with a JES first grade class for the project. Having a 'reading buddy' is a literacy strategy where young readers read aloud freely without criticism to the buddy every night for 15 minutes. Research shows that reading buddies keep students on task, provide an audience, and develop purpose.
For teens, research indicates that mentoring leads to meaningful social emotional learning. One strategy for supporting social emotional learning (SEL) is to build a sense of community through cross-age peer mentoring to enhance students' connection to school and to each other. The reading buddy project allows JMS and JES students to connect in a meaningful and mutually beneficial way.
To execute this project, unsuspecting first graders were asked during a routine reading station to draw 'reading buddies'-creatures that they could imagine reading to every night. The drawings were then secretly delivered to our FCS classroom, where middle school mentors worked diligently to bring the drawings to life with their sewing skills. Audio recorders with personal messages were also sewn into the buddies to encourage the mentees to continue reading.
For the culminating activity, the JMS students visited the first grade classroom and surprised the first graders with the stuffed animal/character versions of their reading buddies. During the visit, the FCS students also read a book they created which featured each student on an adventure with the reading buddies.
