Posted 11/18/2018 11:07PM

Shell Oil and the Pittsburgh Steelers sponsored a competition called Powering Pittsburgh – Make the Future Design Challenge for students in Allegheny, Beaver and Washington Counties. Teams of 4 students presented their idea of the future for powering Heinz Field or the city of Pittsburgh through a 10 minute presentation and a model/prototype of their idea. Nine teams competed in the final round at Heinz Field on November 15, 2018. Two teams of Mt. Lebanon students in the STEM Academy advanced to this final competition with one team becoming the 2018 Champions of the High School Division.

The students who were part of the winning team named "Future Female Scientists" are:

Chloe Spikula
Carmen Hagerty
Maddie Snyder
Ava Duchin

These four 10th grade students along with STEM Academy Director Susan Gillette Meer will receive a check for $1,500 for the STEM program and a Steelers Game Day Experience on December 2, 2018, where the winning teams will be honored in a video at the Steelers game and be presented with a check on the field.

The other team of students who advanced to that final round with an excellent proposal consisted of Molly Schwertfuehrer, Anna Mares, Melody Reynolds, and Natalie McGee, all in 9th grade.
